Nina Gjone on "auto-renewal scam"

I signed up for a free account in 2013. I did not know I have been charged every single year since even though I haven't used over 5 GB. I recently was charged again even though I got an email prior to the charge saying that if I don't update my credit card info, I would lose my storage. That is what I wanted, so I didn't update anything, and yet iDrive charged me another $69 for more storage. I disabled the auto renewal because I DID NOT KNOW I was being charged all these years. Is it possible to get a refund for the last charge that happened on September 5th? I am not using iDrive and I do not wish to pay for something that I did not agree to or did not even know I paid for. The card information on my profile is even out of date, how is it possible that you could charge me when the numbers don't match with the numbers on my current credit card.

Yeah, I have just figured this out the hard way! What a shame you don't make this clear in your FAQs or product info.
This is really poor. I have duplicates all over the place in my mapped drive backup from moving stuff around and it seems the only practical way to fix this is to delete the backup and start over. No mean feat when confronted by your appalling upload speeds, that you try to blame everyone else for; e.g. ISP, nodes, bandwidth, network traffic, connection speed, routing hops, etc. I don't buy it. I can upload to OneDrive at 18.5Mbps compared to your lousy 400-500kbps. Stop thinking we're all stupid!
The other thing that Cleanup doesn't do even on normal drives is remove deleted folders. It just stores empty folders that don't even exist anymore. So again, I am considering deleting the backup on other drives and starting over. This is not what I thought I was subscribing to.

1. Archive Cleanup does not work on mapped drives. IDrive have confirmed this.
2. On non-mapped drives, Archive Cleanup does not remove deleted folders - only files.

Basically, when you combine these two points with the fundamental flaw highlighted in the initial post (thanks MLB for explaining this), Archive Cleanup is simply useless. Period.

The only way to clean your backup is as MLB suggests: To periodically completely wipe your archive and rebuild the backup from scratch. However, in addition to everything becoming more manual, you also lose other features like version control :(

I'm looking elsewhere.

Luckily, I copied the above comment to clipboard before posting as even this forum is broken. Will try to post again...

EDIT to previous post:

You do not lose versioning when rebuilding the backup as all files are retained on IDrive's servers and reappear when 'backed-up' again. As MLB explains this method circumvents the long backup times that would arise if files were actually re-uploaded.

I would still rather have the Archive Cleanup fixed though.

No problem loading iDrive main page. No problem logging in. However, after logging in, I cannot see my files because the page hangs. Sometime I can see the file after 5 minutes but other times the web browser freeze and I have to close it.

Even if I manage to see my files, any action (upload, download, move files, create new foler etc) take forever and most of the time cause the browser to freeze completely.

Now I cant even open any of my file. When I try, the browser gives an error message:

This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.

<tree message="ERROR" desc="INVALID PATH"/>

I had something very similar. Switching off my browser's ad-blocker fixed it for me.

I have the same problem as everyone else : I have on my online iDrive Archives more files and folders that are actually present on my Mac. The Archives Cleanup fonction does not seem to detect the extra files. Is there any way to fix this and have a true backup ?

Cleanup has controls to avoid inadvertent data deletion. If there are any changes in the drive letter assigned to mapped drive, there will be possibility of data deletion despite data available locally under a different drive letter. Hence as a safety precaution, mapped drive is excluded from cleanup operation.

When cleanup operation is initiated, application will compare backupset selection with files present locally and with the online account. For now archive clean up feature will work only for files, it will work for files inside a folder.

We have forwarded your feedback for inclusion of folders during cleanup operation as an enhancement request.

I'm having the same problems on multiple devices, mutliple web browsers and through multiple internet providers. Everything points to the problem being on idirve's end but I'm not getting a lot of forward movement with them. Growing more frustrated but holding on for the moment although I'm looking at other options just in case this is not resolved in the near future. I was glad to see this thread to affirm that i'm not the only one having this problem, but I wonder why there are not more posts about problems if it is systemic.

stiber on "Excluding/including directories to be backed up regardless of permissions"

This is a question about appropriately setting up directories to back up (or, conversely, to exclude) on a Macintosh. As you know, Mac OS is Unix -- a multi-user OS. I note after installing IDrive that the backup daemons seems to run suid, as root. This makes sense -- they would have to in order to access all of the files on the computer to back them up.

However, the IDrive GUI console runs as an ordinary user's process, with only the permissions of that user. So, while it seems there's no problem to indicate that /Users should be backed up, or /Users/me/Documents (if "me" is the user running the console), there doesn't seem to be a way to indicate that /Users/otheruser/Documents should be backed up. So, this means that many gigabytes of Library and other files will get backed up unnecessarily. Is there any way to specify files to back up that the current user doesn't have read permission for (or, read/execute permission for the enclosing directory)? Or to indicate to exclude them? Any way to specify such a thing (either "back up" or "exclude") by typing in full path names?

Last night's backup failed. Just says retrying when I start it manually. When I try to login to the website, it says "There was some problem, please try later."

I'm having this issue too,

until last night, I was able to backup my files using the scheduled backup in the desktop app.

this night, the backup failed in the middle and this is what I error logs show:

--------- start error log --------
[Total retry attempts : 24]
[Start Time: 03/10/2016 03:58:32]
[End Time: 03/10/2016 07:53:52]
[Files considered for backup: 110623]
[Files already present in your account: 7416]
[Files backed up now: 721, Size: 3.63 GB]
[Unable to continue the backup operation.
Reason : Possible reasons:
1. Ensure that you do not have an intermittent Internet connection.
2. Check if you have granted the necessary privileges on local firewall settings for it to run correctly.]
--------- end error log --------

now the backup fails right on the start so I can't backup or restore any of my files with the desktop app.

furthermore and more worrisome, I opened idrive's site and tried to login to my account online, via web, using my browser and after entering my login username and password got this error:
"There was some problem, please try later."

so I can't access my account either via web or via the desktop app...
this is scary...

members, please replay if you are having this issue too

We are having the same issue. I sent an email as requested and still get "cannot connect". I go to website and log on and it says no data to display. I called customer service and got a message "please leave a message" with no indication it is iDrive i am calling.

EAZ on "Synology 404 error on apache"

Since DSM 6, I had to change the backend server from apache to nginx, to avoid the error 404 upon starting the idrive app.

Since recent, I have installed a Drupal application, that will only work with Apache (Error 403).

Is there any possibility that Idrive will (again) function on the standard Apache backend? This is a very annoying situation...
